Ode to Vincent

Clay, Modelling Compound, Glue, Metal and Oil Paint on Board.
730mm x 870mm

My sunflowers painting shows my love of, and influence from, Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflower’ painting. This work is very much different to Vincents work in size, [smaller], the 3-dimensional shape and therefore composition in the arrangement of the flowers, but similar in colour and feeling, as well as recognising it was Vincent’s work in the title, to satisfy copyright.

This work shows my practice of combining 2D and 3D work, which can be very time-consuming, however, it's very holistic and satisfying. Firstly, I grew the sunflowers. After drying and removing the husks, I made 3 or 4 plaster casts of the flowers and slip cast these moulds in clay. After drying and firing these in the kiln, they were glued to a very rigid painting board using tilers glue. I used artists’ modelling compound to create the petals and the leaves and metal rod for the stems. I then painted the work in oil paint and it's one of my favourite paintings combining 2-D and 3-D work.
