Home for a Thousand Creatures

Acrylic on Canvas
1405 mm x 2035 mm

I’ve always been fascinated by Gum trees. I like looking up into the tree from the base and appreciating their size. Because we are taking all of the larger trees, we are destroying the habitat for thousands of creatures that call a Gum tree home: insects, mammals, birds, and snakes. I remember going camping on a church caving trip as a young teenager and 9 children and 2 adults held hand around the base of one of these ancient forest giants and we still could not link hands to complete the circle. Sadly very few of these giant trees are left for future generations to see and enjoy. The textured surface on the lower part of the trunk of the tree is created with artists modelling compound before painting. There are ten birds in the painting for you to find.
